College Counseling

College Counseling Mission & Philosophy

Our College Counseling team partners with Oakcrest families and faculty to guide Upper School students through the college search and application process. Informational and practical workshops and the ongoing assistance of our college counselors help each student grow in self-knowledge, identify her interests, and find her best college match.

Beginning in 9th grade and continuing through senior year, students are presented with opportunities to learn more about their strengths and interests. By engaging early in the process, structuring a timeline, and making sure to keep in contact with the college counselors, students can make the process their own. Being an active participant in the university search process empowers the student and helps her to sort through her priorities, strengths and weaknesses, dreams and goals.

College Night

College Night highlights the vision of our college counseling program and sheds light on important university insights. The theme of the night alternates each year between a look at the admissions process from the perspective of university representatives and an alumnae parent panel which focuses on acclimating to and navigating university life.

College Days

In the spring of junior year, students spend an entire day being introduced to the different aspects of their college application. Another college day occurs in October of their senior year.

College Rep Visits

Each fall, Oakcrest invites admissions representatives from selective colleges and universities to schedule meetings to speak with our students. These sessions are an excellent opportunity for students, beginning in eleventh grade, to learn about a particular school and hear from someone who spends considerable time on campus and often is an alumna/us of the school. Students are encouraged to attend these small meetings and make personal connections with the admissions representatives.

One of the most valuable services provided at Oakcrest, and a feature that sets Oakcrest apart from other high schools, is its college counseling process. I cannot overstate how helpful it has been for our family to meet with a college counselor each year of high school in preparation for our daughter’s upcoming application season.
