College Counseling Mission & Philosophy

The goal of the College Counseling program is to guide Upper School students through the college search and application process, encouraging self-reflection, and thoughtful consideration of each girl’s own goals and visions for her future in order to find the right college fit.

Beginning in 10th grade and continuing through senior year, students are presented with opportunities to learn more about their strengths and interests, discern what they are looking for in a college environment, and navigate the process one step at a time. By engaging early, crafting a timeline, and making sure to keep in contact with the college counselor, students can make the process their own.

College Night

College Night (typically held in the fall) is tailored for parents and highlights the vision of our college counseling program and sheds light on the ever-changing landscape of college admissions. Topics include what to expect in the application process, updates to standardized testing, understanding the transcript, and what colleges are looking for. The presentation also includes an alumnae parent panel, where parents of recent graduates share how their daughters navigated the application process and are acclimating to university life.

College Days

Junior College Day: Held in the spring, juniors spend an afternoon learning about the different aspects of the college application (creating a Common Application, building a resume, brainstorming essay topics).

Senior College Day: Held in early October ahead of most major deadlines, seniors spend a day finalizing their applications, working on their personal and supplemental essays, applying for scholarships, and meeting one-on-one with the college counselor.

College Rep Visits

Each fall, Oakcrest hosts admissions representatives from over 35 colleges and universities to come and speak with our students on campus. These visits are informal and informational, and an excellent opportunity for our juniors and seniors to learn about a particular school and make personal connections with the admissions representatives. Visitors include: University of Notre Dame, Hillsdale College, University of Tennessee, College of William and Mary, University of Dallas, Belmont Abbey College, Drexel University, University of Virginia, and Universidad de Navarra.

One of the most valuable services provided at Oakcrest, and a feature that sets Oakcrest apart from other high schools, is its college counseling process. I cannot overstate how helpful it has been for our family to meet with a college counselor each year of high school in preparation for our daughter’s upcoming application season.
