Introducing our charity for the school year: Mary's Meals

Mary’s Meals is a global organization committed to contributing to the solution to world hunger by providing children meals in their place of education every day. Throughout the 2023-2024 school year, Mary’s Meals is the chosen Oakcrest School charity project. Each month, a different grade will host a fundraiser to raise funds which will be given to Mary’s Meals at the end of the school year.
In an effort to give the students a glimpse of how their efforts can impact others, Bill Gavin, Regional Development Officer for Mary’s Meals, visited Oakcrest to speak to the students about Mary’s Meals. Mr. Gavin is the brother-in-law of languages teacher Ms. Monica Pompei.

Sharing the organization’s impact, Mr. Gavin expressed how the organization seeks to be “a light in the darkness.” Founded in 2003 providing meals to 200 children in Malawi, Mary’s Meals now provides meals to 2,429,182 children in 18 countries, every day.

“We see ourselves as partnering with the poor. They are not the problem, they are the solution. It’s a very humble approach to see their dignity and to be sustaining and helping them to participate in working with them,” Mr. Gavin said. “We hope one day that we don’t have to do this, we hope that one day they can be self-sufficient. We get requests almost every day from countries and places in need around the world… We see that Mary’s Meals really makes a difference, it keeps the kids in school, it gives them hope, it gives them a chance to stay educated, and that gets them out of the cycle of poverty and part of the solution.”
