Oakcrest Theology Teacher to Visit the Holy Land
Whether it’s studying abroad or presenting papers at a conference, Oakcrest teachers are involved in all types of impressive professional development opportunities. One of those opportunities recently came up for Holly Salls, theology teacher and student life coordinator at Oakcrest. In February of 2020, Ms. Salls will travel to Jerusalem for the Holy Land Dialogues program.
Holy Land Dialogues, hosted by the Saxum Foundation, combines visits to holy sites with academic lectures given by experts, with the aim of fostering intercultural and interreligious dialogue in the Holy Land. The program began ten years ago to foster understanding of how Christians, Jews, and Muslims perceive the Holy Land and how their customs, histories, and cultures intertwine in both ancient history and current events. Stops on the trip will include visits to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Nazareth, Mt. Tabor, Qumran, Bethlehem, Ein Kerem, and Mount Zion.
Ms. Salls has taught at Oakcrest since 2007 and is the author of the book Character Education: Transforming Values into Virtue. This program naturally meshes with her professional interests as an experienced theology and philosophy teacher and she looks forward to sharing what she learns in the Holy Land with Oakcrest students. “I teach Sacred Scripture and the Life of Christ, so this is a natural professional development activity for me,” she says. “I am delighted to be able to experience the Holy Land firsthand.”
Ms. Salls received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and her Master of Arts from the University of Navarre, Pamplona, Spain. Seventy percent of Oakcrest faculty hold an advanced degree. Learn more about our outstanding faculty here.
