Self-Esteem Without Selfishness: Increasing Our Capacity for Love

Fr. Michel Esparza
In this book Fr. Esparza, who received his medical degree from the Catholic University of Louvaine (Belgium) and his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome, shows us the principles that sustain the fact that the quality of one’s relationship with oneself determines the quality of one’s relationships with others.

Within the ideal development of affectivity and personality, it is important to cultivate a positive and realistic attitude towards oneself, and the author terms it as “humble-self-esteem”. It is the journey of reconciling our personal imperfections with the greatness of being children of God. Our inner peace and happiness of all our relationships depend on it.

The centrality of a proper self-love is not egotistical, on the contrary, it leads us to  patiently and with understanding deal with our own limitations and treat others’ shortcomings in the same way. Our inner peace and happiness of all our relationships depend on it.

Moreover, as the book’s subtitle tells us, "Increasing Our Capacity for Love," in a fully stable and unconditional manner, which is the second part of the book, depends ultimately on the discovery of the love of God, of knowing and experiencing that we can love our own frailty without deception before a merciful Lover.
