Oakcrest holds first pep rally in the new McGowan Family Athletic Center
The entire Oakcrest student body, adorned in Oakcrest green and white and bursting with shouts of jubilation and ringing of bells, ascended on the gym floor for the very first time following a ceremonial ribbon cutting to open the new McGowan Family Athletic Center on May 2, 2023. Students, faculty and staff were joined by many of the project’s sponsors, including Dorothy and Brian McGowan, for an afternoon of celebration at the inaugural pep rally.
The McGowan Family Athletic Center is a 25,000 square foot addition to the main building that includes athletic facilities and academic classrooms that provide space as Oakcrest continues to grow. Thanks to the work of Coakley & Williams Construction, APM, and Davis Carter Scott Architects, the project was completed in late April.
The main level of the athletic center features a Wall of Gratitude thanking the major benefactors who made this project possible for Oakcrest. Classrooms and additional staff offices are also located on the main level, in addition to a concession stand that will feature Oakie Outfitters merchandise.
Within the gym is a floating wood floor designed for maximum performance and safety, home and away team locker rooms, a PE changing room and storage for sports equipment. The space seats more than 230 spectators in bleachers and when a protective covering is put in place, more than 600 people can be seated in the gym for events such as concerts, Awards Day, and Graduation.
Three additional classrooms are on the second floor of the center with a commons that can be used as a gathering area overlooking the gym. A special highlight on the second floor is a fitness center designed specifically for training female athletes with equipment from Sorinex.
The McGowan Family Athletic Center is home to 27 teams playing 11 different sports with seasons in the fall, winter, and spring. More than 85 percent of Oakcrest students participate in the athletics program. Oakcrest offers multiple levels of each sport - Basketball, Cross Country, Golf, Lacrosse, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, Track & Field, and Volleyball - which allows athletes of all abilities to participate in its program.
