The Oakcrest Chargers have enjoyed an excellent spring sports season, with Golf, Lacrosse, and Track & Field teams achieving impressive wins and setting new school records both on the individual and team levels.
On April 1, Oakcrest’s Varsity Track & Field team competed against 8 other schools at Bishop O’Connell High School and won the entire meet with 56 points. Lily James set a new school record at the meet in the 1600m with a time of 5:26.71. At the NoVa Invitational in Fairfax on April 5-6, the Varsity Distance Medley relay team—Alex Murphy (1200m), Stephanie Murphy (400m), Lily James (800m), and Hannah Lu (1600m)—finished in fourth place and set a new school record of 13:45.20. The 4x800m relay team (Stephanie Murphy, Hannah Lu, Alex Murphy, Lily James) placed fifth with a time of 10:13.33. Lily James gave a particularly strong performance, coming in fourth out of 74 athletes in the 400m on Friday and placing sixth out of 83 runners on Saturday.
At the Draper Middle School Track Meet on April 29, Oakcrest’s Middle School team finished in second place out of 20 schools with 75 points. Teri Crnkovich, Lily Spence, Sally Mohler, and Audrey Elam ran as the 4x100m relay team and finished with a time of 57.11, setting a new school record. The 4x400m relay team—Teri Crnkovich, Lily Spence, Audrey Elam, and Zoe Burke—achieved a 4:36.14 time, which also set a school record and won them a second place overall finish. Zoe Burke took first place in the 800m, running a 2:35.15, and second place in the 400m. Audrey Elam claimed third in the 100m, and Lily Spence placed second in discus.
Varsity Lacrosse is also enjoying a strong winning streak, having defeated Middleburg Academy, Sandy Springs Friends School, and most recently, Wilson High School on April 11 in an exciting game that ended with a 7-4 Charger victory.
Oakcrest’s Golf team has been having its own moment. The Chargers make up the only all-girls golf team in the league and have gone up against stiff competition with confidence. The team won its first ever match against Sandy Springs Friends School on April 3. And students Grace Falatko, Megan Meehan, Amalia Ryland, Mackenzie Massiello and Lexi Carlsen made the top 20 in the PVAC Mid-Season Challenge.
In addition to its faculty and staff coaches, Oakcrest is proud to have several alumnae coaching spring sports this year. Meg Gargulinski ('11) coaches Middle School Lacrosse, and Grace McGiffin ('18) and Clare Polis ('17) serve as Track & Field coaches.
