8th Grade Hikes Old Rag Mountain

The eighth grade class, led by Dean of Students Ms. Meghan Hadley ‘06, Mrs. Andie Salerno and Mrs. Margaret Sweatman, Middle School Athletic Director, climbed the 9.3 mile-loop trail on Old Rag Mountain in Shenandoah National Park. The hike is a culmination of the eighth grade’s Grade Level Experience, guiding the class through formation as “champions of freedom and responsibility” before they cross the threshold into upper school.
Each time the eighth grade class climbs up Old Rag, the class faces the challenge of the trail’s various rock scrambles, but is rewarded with a beautiful 360-degree view of the mountain range. As the girls climb and descend the mountain, they bond with their class while cheering one another on and facing the monumental feat of completing the hike. After finishing, the class enjoys a dinner, which they are tasked with planning ahead of time, and a bonfire under the stars.
