Three Oakcrest seniors sign to continue athletic careers in college

Three Oakcrest seniors - Regina Baird, Zoe Burke and Teddie Yeagley - signed to continue their athletic careers at their chosen universities in a college signing ceremony on Tuesday, May 16, 2023 with many of their coaches, family, and peers in attendance.
Regina Baird committed to the cross country and track teams at Ave Maria University in Ave Maria, Florida, an NAIA member university. Throughout her time at Oakcrest, Regina has competed in events all four years and qualified for the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association State meet each year.

Her coach, Ms. Laurie Duncan, said of Regina, “She always comes ready to put in the work, but with the biggest smile on her face. She is a merry warrior on the trail, a cheerful giver when on the sidelines, and a natural coach to those around her.”

Zoe Burke will join the NCAA Division II track and field team at Hillsdale College in Michigan. For the past seven years, Zoe has been a key member of the track and field teams at Oakcrest, holding the school records for the Middle School 800 and 1600 meter runs and as a member of the Middle School 4x400, varsity 4x400 and 4x800 meter relay teams. She has qualified for the VISAA Indoor Track and Field State Championship twice and the VISAA Outdoor Track and Field State Championships three times.

“Zoe is an incredible runner to coach and it's always exciting to watch her race,” Track Coach Mrs. Jen Pruskowski said. “She is calm and composed; tenacious yet graceful.  No matter where she was in a race, she always managed to calmly pull ahead and find a way to win or achieve her goal."

Teddie Yeagley will play lacrosse at the University of Mary Washington, a NCAA Division III University in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Throughout her years of playing lacrosse at Oakcrest, Teddie achieved 55 goals, nine assists, 10 ground balls, and 10 caused turnovers. Throughout her senior season, she was the team’s second-leading offensive player with eight turnovers and six ground balls.

Lacrosse coach Meg Gargulinski ‘11 said that “Teddy leads by example, working hard in every practice and game.  She is dangerous in the attacking redefend. She has never missed a single game and has started on the field in every single game she played.”

Head of School Dr. Mary T. Ortiz said at the signing ceremony, “We are so proud of each of you and this accomplishment is no small feat. Not only are you all very talented and dedicated athletes, but you are also wonderful role models for your teammates and friends.”

At Oakcrest, more than 85 percent of the student body participates in the athletic department sports teams or fitness classes. The program offers 11 different sports at several levels, allowing athletes of all abilities to compete. Oakcrest is a member of the Virginia Christian Athletic Conference and the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association. To learn more about athletics at Oakcrest visit our website
