9th grade Olympic games ends with symposium

 

This Grade Level Experience began at the beginning of the year as students were divided into teams, taking the name of a city-state such as Athens, Jerusalem, Sparta, and Alexandria. Following the opening ceremony, when the teams waved their decorated flags, they competed in an epic tug-of-war to kick off the Olympic games. 

Throughout the rest of the semester, students competed in activities in several of their classes, from a Latin vocabulary challenge to creating a tableau to poetry recitation. Outside of the classroom, they also participated in activities such as a school-wide scavenger hunt and minute-to-win-it games. 

To complete the Grade Level Experience, the students attended a Greek Symposium, a day of feasting and entertainment. Each team provided themed dishes for a class potluck meal, and also performed a short themed skit. It was an opportunity for the class to reflect on the semester’s experiences, reminiscing the memories they made as they overcame the challenges and grew closer as a class. At the class’s closing ceremony, the teams Tenochtitlan (gold), Sparta (silver), and Cuzco (bronze) took the podium.
