Meet our new Middle School Athletic Director

For Middle School Athletic Director Margaret Sweatman, sports and athletics have played a large and important role throughout her life, from growing up in a large family to competing professionally in adulthood to her new role at Oakcrest. Mother of Grace ’25, Ryan ’26, and Kate ’29, Mrs. Sweatman brings a passion for women’s sports and a love of the game to the Oakcrest athletic department.

In high school, Mrs. Sweatman played soccer, basketball, and ran track, serving as captain on all three teams. When she went off to Providence College in Rhode Island, she played rugby and after graduating, she played rugby and Gaelic football (her favorite sport!) for a team in Washington, D.C., and has been a CrossFit athlete for many years.

“The foundation I received from my high school sports teams has stayed with me through
my life, and I have participated in a sport in every stage of my life,” Mrs. Sweatman said. “I believe it is through sports that young women best discover their personal inner strength and God-given talents that don’t come to light in any other arena.”

Looking at sports and athletics as something that so positively has shaped her life, Mrs. Sweatman hopes that Oakcrest students will continue to get involved in the athletic programs.

“The qualities you learn in the athletic classroom are sometimes things you can’t learn in the normal classroom,” she said. “You learn leadership, mental toughness, discover chemistry on the field, and also see what you’re capable of. You get to work as a team and learn that together we can accomplish something. You deal with failure, injury, losing, defeat, public failures and you move on and move from it. It is really important for young girls to see athletics as making them stronger physically and mentally.”

As Middle School Athletic Director, Mrs. Sweatman said she hopes she can help enhance the current program and help the coaches have “more tools and more support to bring out the potential of each player and the potential of each team.”

“I’d like to build school spirit and camaraderie, and I think the new athletic center will help with that,” she added. “Having pride in your sports is having pride in your school, sports often introduce our school to the world, it’s a first impression that a lot of people have of Oakcrest.”

Mrs. Sweatman said she hopes to encourage young students to get involved in sports, telling them to “just show up.”

“Just show up and work hard and have an interest; we will figure it out,” she said. “There are a lot of people here that want to see you succeed and will help you. At the end of the day it will just be fun with your classmates in this setting.”
