Athletics Highlight: Fall Season for Middle School Sports

As Oakcrest Middle School Athletics continues to grow and the programs develop and thrive, the teams have made significant strides this Fall 2022 season.

Middle School Tennis won their first-ever match in school history, defeating St. Stephen’s and St Agnes School. Art teacher Vickie Bigliano and math teacher Natasha Hamblet coached the team to victory, with all four single courts and the #2 doubles court winning their matches.

"This was the first year for Middle School Tennis at Oakcrest,” Coach Bigliano said. “Our first match was against St. Stephen's and St. Agnes middle school team and we won our match 5-3. It was wonderful to see how quickly the girls came together in their singles and doubles play. Not only did they cheer each other on but they were well focussed in their matches.”

Volleyball had great interest at tryouts in August, resulting in two teams with Middle School students: a sixth grade team and a middle school team. This was the first year that a sixth grade team was formed for volleyball.  The Middle School Volleyball coaches - alumna Tara (Hill ’11) Van Zoeren, science teacher and 9th grade Class Dean Ana Rose Soley, History Master teacher Kathleen Ouyang ’09 - have worked to build the teams’ skills while bringing in impressive wins for the sixth grade team against Providence Academy and against Virginia Academy for the middle school team.

Coach Ouyang said that many of the sixth graders started this season new to volleyball. “They worked hard during practice for Coach Soley and me, developed a basic understanding of the game, and improved so much,” she said. “They were overjoyed to have their first win against Providence Academy. The game was very close, and they really honed in on certain areas, like calling the ball and getting their serves in.”

Middle School Cross Country has also had its share of success this season, winning the second tri-meet of the season, defeating St. Andrew’s Episcopal School and Potomac School. Full results from that meet can be found here. The Middle School Cross Country team is coached by English teacher Caeli Lanzilotti and history teacher Aimee Maturi.

“Coach Lanzilotti and I were very impressed with the girls at the meet on October 18,” Coach Maturi said. “Potomac is a tough course and luckily, the girls took advantage of their previous experience with the course to overcome it with excellence. We won the meet, which was just an amazing feat. More importantly, many of the girls beat their times from the last time we were at Potomac and most beat their own personal record! We are incredibly proud of all their hard work throughout the season and leading up to this.”
