Anne of Green Gables Tea, an Oakcrest Tradition

In the sixth grade at Oakcrest, one of the first books the students read in English is the beloved novel Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery. As the students finish the book, they enjoy a beautiful tea hosted by sixth grade English teachers Mrs. Stephanie Passero and Ms. Anna Cipollone ’17.

Dressed in their “second-best” dresses, a nod to how Diana Berry arrives for her afternoon tea with Anne Shirley in the book, the sixth grade students learned proper tea etiquette and engaged in conversation with their deans and teachers while dining on treats that are mentioned in the novel such as tea sandwiches, cream puffs, and raspberry cordial.

As part of the entertainment for their guests, the sixth grade students delivered a recitation of the poem, Lady of Shalott by Alfred Lord Tennyson, a poem mentioned by Anne Shirley in the novel. Following the tea, the students made paper flowers in a nod to Anne’s love for beauty, and learned how to dance the Virginia Reel, following Anne’s love for dancing.

Throughout the rest of the year, the sixth grade will read an assortment of classic literature such as Beowulf, Dragon Slayer by Rosemary Sutcliff , The Wanderings of Odysseus: The Story of the Odyssey by Rosemary Sutcliff, and The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare.
