Oakcrest students to perform The Sound of Music

Oakcrest is pleased to announce the Upper School Fall Theatre Production, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music. The musical is based on the story of the Von Trapp Family in Austria in the wake of World War II. Performances will take place on November 4 and November 5 at 7:00 pm at Richard J. Ernst Theater in Annandale.

After Maria Rainer struggles to fit in as a postulant at Nonnberg Abbey, she is sent by the Mother Abbess to be the governess of the seven Von Trapp children. As Maria captivates the whole family, including their widowed father, Captain Von Trapp, she introduces them to the world of singing and performing as a family. When Austria is overtaken by the Nazis and Captain Von Trapp is summoned for service in the Nazi Navy, the family must find a way to escape.

The Oakcrest show will feature Monica Beatty ’24 as Maria Rainer and Bianca Navarro ’23 as Mother Abbess. Oakcrest Theatre teacher Dr. Kristin (O’Malley) Ricci will direct the production.

“We are thrilled to be performing The Sound of Music this year,” Dr. Ricci said. “We chose this show for two reasons. First, we looked back at what shows our Upper School students had the chance to perform in over the past few years, and most recently we had performed two newer musicals, James and the Giant Peach and Mary Poppins, as well as a Greek drama. The theatre team thought that a classic Golden Age musical would round out the students' acting experiences well. Second, Oakcrest is currently blessed to have many talented students. We chose The Sound of Music specifically because the show has a wide variety of roles that allow us to highlight a large number of students in a significant manner.”

“We are early in the rehearsal process, but we are delighted by the actors' efforts, and we are excited to start working with our student designers soon,” she said.

Dr. Kristin (O’Malley) Ricci earned a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in Theatre Arts and Performance Studies. She has a Master of Arts in Theatre Education from Catholic University and a Bachelor of Arts in Drama from Franciscan University of Steubenville. Dr. Ricci has directed over twenty shows. This summer she led Oakcrest’s summer Musical Theatre Program, where students performed Annie, Jr. after a two-week intensive theatre workshop.
