Oakcrest honors Blessed Mother with May Crowning

On Monday, May 9, the students of Oakcrest placed a beautiful crown made of fresh flowers on the head of Our Lady of Oakcrest in a special dedication. The month of May is dedicated to Our Lady.
The crowns that sit on the head of Our Lady of Oakcrest and baby Jesus throughout the year are embellished with details that tell the story of Oakcrest School and those who have supported the school throughout the years. They are on display in the chapel vestibule on May 9 and 10.

Designed by artist Dejan Jovanovic, the Marian crown has a relief of the school’s permanent campus on its front, calling upon Our Lady’s mission for the school to form generations of young women to be strong trustees of humanity.

Within the crown that sits on the head of baby Jesus are two special days in the history of Oakcrest:  the date of the school’s first Mass, September 15, 1976, which was celebrated by Fr. Ron Gillis on the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, and August 26, 2017, when the altar in the Vienna campus was consecrated and the Blessed Sacrament was reserved for the first time in the chapel. A Latin phrase is also engraved in the crown that translates to “Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of Glory, that we may obtain mercy, which refers to Our Lady as the Throne of Glory, as she carries her children to her Son. The crowns were first placed on Our Lady of Oakcrest and Baby Jesus during a special Mass in March, 2019.
