Oakies Serve Up Creative Entries at Cake Competition

Students, faculty and staff recently gathered  in Walsh Hall for a beloved Oakcrest tradition—the Annual Middle School Cake Competition.
The competition, which is in its 8th year, is a way for Oakies of all grades to share their baking skills and creativity with the community while raising money for Oakcrest’s school charity.

The competition is organized each year by the Middle School Student Executive Council. Executive officers CJ Sands ‘26, Beatrice Hatch ‘26,  Mia Nash ‘27,  Monica White ‘27,  Madeline Clary ‘28 and Yana Garcia ‘28 facilitated the event this year  and faculty members judged the cakes on both creativity and taste.  Students bought cake slices to eat after the judges looked at them with the proceeds going to Los Samanes a program run by Oakcrest’s sister school in Venezuela, which is providing an education for girls in the midst of ongoing political and economic turmoil in the country.

This year’s theme was “Not Cake.” Students were challenged to create a cake that looked like anything except actual cake on the outside. Some of this year’s entries included cakes that looked like books, sushi, the Oakcrest school bus, a rocket ship, a vase of flowers, and much more. Ultimately, Clare Sypal ‘25 won first place for her cake that looked like a Crayola Crayons box. Second place went to Beatrice Hatch ‘26, Zosia Collins ‘25, and Ellie Marx ‘26 for a cake that looked like a garden full of succulents, and third place was taken by Madie Kilner ‘27, whose coffee-flavored cake looked like a mug of root beer.

Oakies succeeded in raising $1,328.61 for Los Samanes through the cake competition. All of the students' fundraising efforts this year benefit Los Samanes. Learn more about the program here
