Science Olympiad Team Advances to States for Fourth Year in a Row

Oakcrest School’s Science Olympiad team is once again advancing to the Virginia State Science Olympiad Tournament after competing in the Lake Braddock regional tournament on Saturday, February 26.  

Oakcrest sent 34 students in two Upper School teams and one Middle School team to the regional competition. Upper School students participated in the Trajectory, Ping Pong Parachute, Gravity Vehicle, Detector Building, Wifi Lab, Bridge Building, and It's About Time events. The Middle School team competed in Storm the Castle, Bridge, Mission Possible, Mousetrap Vehicle, Ping Pong Parachute, and Sounds of Music. Oakcrest students medaled in multiple events: 

  • Rachel Fischer ‘22 and Faven Kifle ‘23 took first place in Gravity Vehicle
  • Ashleigh Yaghmour ‘25 and Cecelia Meunier '23 took second place in Forensics
  • Erin King ‘23 and Rima Al-Mosawy ‘23 took fourth place in Chemistry Lab
  • Amirah Yaghmour ‘27 and Brigita Eschmann ‘28 took fourth place in Ping Pong Parachute
  • Rachel Fischer ‘22, Katherine LeMaster ‘22, and Erin King ‘23 took sixth place in Experimental Design and Data Analysis
  • Josefina Tavella ‘23, Ashleigh Yaghmour ‘25, and Anne Marie Branch ‘22 took sixth place in Codebusters 

Both the Upper and Middle School teams have been invited to compete in the state competition at The University of Virginia on Saturday, March 26. 

This is the seventh year that Oakcrest School has competed in the Science Olympiad and its fourth year qualifying for the state tournament. In 2019, Oakcrest was the first all-girls team in history to compete in the Virginia State Science Olympiad tournament, finishing in the top ten in the categories of Designer Genes, Fossils, and Protein Modeling. Oakcrest science teacher and Science Olympiad moderator Dr. Kat Hussmann also received the 2019 Virginia Science Olympiad Coach of the Year award. In the 2020 regional competition, Oakcrest took first place among eleven high schools in the Anatomy and Physiology competition, and fourth in the Detector Building category, advancing to the state competition.
