Oakcrest Continues All-School Service Day Tradition

This year, Oakcrest’s 300 students served at a total of fifteen different locations. Oakies put their time and talents at the service of local communities in a variety of ways. They gardened and beautified parks such as Riverbend Park, Frying Pan Park, Congressional Cemetery, and the National Mall and Monuments. Members of the Oakcrest orchestra traveled to Sunrise Senior Living Community and performed an outdoor concert for residents. Others sorted supplies for sites such as Clock Tower Thrift Store, or offered free childcare.

 

“The Friday of Fall Spirit Week is a special day at Oakcrest,” says Dean of Students Meghan Hadley. “Our faculty and students recognize that we've all been given much and have a responsibility to care for our larger community.”

 

Service lies at the center of leadership and character education at Oakcrest.  Students fulfill a specified number of hours serving others in their homes and communities Working with the student council, girls can initiate school-based service programs, and the school is home to the Service Initiatives Project, an initiative comprised of six different monthly service projects organized and managed by student coordinators.
