Oakcrest Prepares for 2021 Commencement

Oakcrest will welcome alumna Laura O’Neill ‘96 as the commencement speaker at the Class of 2021’s graduation ceremony on Saturday, June 5th.

The 35 members of the Class of 2021 will be attending a wide range of colleges and universities throughout the country, including Notre Dame University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Pepperdine University, Pratt Institute, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Mrs. O’Neill will be speaking on the 25th anniversary of her own graduation from Oakcrest. She holds a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Divine Mercy University and works as a psychotherapist at the Alpha Omega Clinic in Fairfax, Virginia. Mrs. O'Neill earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Villanova University and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant into the United States Army after having an ROTC Scholarship at the university. She worked as an Army nurse in the Medical and Pediatric ICU at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for the first five years of her nursing career and then at various other hospitals in Northern Virginia. Now, with her clients, she continues to draw on her experience as a nurse and is passionate about helping individuals develop an awareness of how the body, mind, and soul are integrated, noting patterns of emotional wellness intersecting with physical and spiritual wellness.

The Class of 2021 has led the school community through a challenging year with creativity, school spirit, and joy.  The seniors have thrived and accomplished much during their final semesters at Oakcrest. Seven seniors were recognized this past fall as National Merit Scholarship Commended Students, setting a record for the school. Three members of the Class of 2021 were also selected for the College Board National Recognition Programs, recognized as having scored in the top 2.5% on the PSAT. Oakcrest’s Science Olympiad team advanced to the Virginia State tournament for the third year in a row. Senior Ellen Stark signed with Randolph-Macon College to play lacrosse. The Class of 2021 will be deeply missed on their departure, and Oakcrest looks forward to celebrating their graduation.
