Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age

Sherry Turkle
It’s a stereotype with a lot of truth behind it: girls like to talk!  Which makes for some very loud halls at Oakcrest.

Even the quietest girls enjoy a good conversation between classes and during lunch.  I think author Sherry Turkle would be very proud of the atmosphere at Oakcrest. In her book, Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age, Turkle makes the case for face-to-face contact, at the dinner table, at the watercooler, even when waiting in line. Her five years of research support the argument that conversation begins with self-reflection but ends up improving empathy, learning, productivity, even democracy and the bottom line. Here at Oakcrest, not only do we provide time for solitude (Mass and Enrichment) but we ban much electronic communication during the school day, forcing us to talk more!
