Alumna Colleen Beatty Returns to Coach Middle School Basketball

Oakcrest alumna Colleen Beatty (‘18) will coach Middle School intramural basketball this winter while she is home for an extended winter break from Virginia Tech.

Colleen, who played basketball throughout her seven years at Oakcrest, looks forward to sharing her knowledge and passion for the game with her fellow Oakies.

Basketball has been a part of Colleen’s life since kindergarten. At Oakcrest, she served as co-team captain for the Middle School team and and again for the Varsity team during her senior year. "Some of my favorite memories were playing full team knock-out at the end of practice in Middle School, playing King of the Court in high school and getting creative with our small space in Balls Hill," she recalls. "I loved getting to spend lots of quality time with my team for four months and looked forward to it every year."

Colleen is now in her third year at Virginia Tech, studying Construction Engineering & Management—a combination of Civil Engineering, Building Construction, and Business Management. After graduation, she hopes to be a project manager in either commercial or residential construction.

In addition to attending to her rigorous academic schedule, she is actively involved with the Catholic community at Virginia Tech and has loved the opportunity to grow deeper in her faith and form relationships with fellow students through the Newman Catholic Campus Ministry. "I have found some of my closest friends through the Newman Center and through all of their events, including the annual sunset Mass and hike on top of a mountain," Colleen notes. "I have grown much deeper in my faith and have learned not to be afraid of living Catholicism in a secular world."

Colleen is excited for the upcoming winter season and hopes to give back what she received from her own years playing basketball at Oakcrest. She says, "I decided to coach at Oakcrest because I want to share my knowledge with the next generation of Oakies and because I have always looked up to my coaches and now is an opportunity to be a good role model for these girls."
