Oakies to Sing at National Catholic Prayer Breakfast

January 31, 2020—Oakcrest School has been invited to sing at the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC on March 30.

Over forty students, directed by Oakcrest Music Master Teacher Anne Miller, will perform several musical selections including a beautiful setting of Ubi Caritas by Kim Andre Arnesen. Singers are from both Oakcrest’s Concert Chorus and its Senior Liturgical Choir.  This will be the second great honor for Oakcrest this year, as it was also chosen to lead the 2020 March for Life.

The National Catholic Prayer Breakfast (NCPB) was established in 2004 in response to Saint John Paul II’s call for a New Evangelization. Each year, over 1,500 people gather in the nation’s capital to pray for our country. An impressive list of speakers highlights a program that attracts lay and religious leaders, national figures, Catholic apostolates, and guests from a variety of sectors and backgrounds. The keynote address at this year’s breakfast will be delivered by Archbishop Charles Chaput O.F.M. Cap. This will be the Oakcrest choir’s second time at the event; students sang at the 2016 National Catholic Prayer Breakfast as well.

The study of music is an important part of Oakcrest School’s liberal arts curriculum. Music study is required of all students in Middle School. Upper School students take Music and Arts Appreciation in their sophomore year and may elect to continue their music study by taking other elective offerings throughout their Upper School years. The Oakcrest Concert Chorus is a pillar of the music program. In addition to singing at school events and concerts, the chorus performs for the surrounding community and abroad. They have performed at assisted living facilities, with the McLean Orchestra, and at some of Italy’s most famous churches. In 2018, the chorus sang at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome at the Papal Mass for the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God.
