Humanities Lecture to Reveal the Beauty, Piety and Fun in Medieval Literature
On March 14 at 7:00 pm,Oakcrest School’s Sixth Annual O’Donovan Humanities Lecture will feature Dr. Evelyn Birge Vitz, Professor Emerita of French Literature, Thought and Culture at New York University. Dr. Vitz will speak about “Beauty, Piety and Fun in Medieval Literature.” The event is free and open to the public.
The O’Donovan Humanities Lecture brings in scholars from around the country to enrich the community and highlight the importance of the humanities in everyday life. The annual event is named after the first Head of Oakcrest, Pat O'Donovan, who opened Oakcrest in 1976 with 22 girls in Washington, D.C. The lecture honors her legacy as a gifted teacher who imparted to students the joy of learning which permeates the Oakcrest curriculum. This annual lecture is an opportunity to spread this joy of learning beyond the classroom into the broader community.
Past speakers have included Dr. Glenn Arbery, President of Wyoming Catholic College, who spoke on “Holy Eve: The True Wonder Woman”; Dr. Arthur C. Brooks, professor at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, on “Life Lessons from the World’s Greatest Composers”; and Wall Street Journal Children’s Book Critic Meghan Cox Gurdon, who explored the transformative power of reading aloud with your family.
Dr. Vitz received her Doctor of Philosophy in French from Yale University. She is a notable foreign language educator and the author of many articles and books, including Medieval Narrative and Modern Narratology and A Continual Feast, a scholarly cookbook centered around the observance of the liturgical year. She has received numerous awards including National Endowment for the Humanities and French Government grants and New York University Golden Dozen Awards for Excellence in Teaching.
