Chargers Kick Off Winter Sports Season

Oakcrest’s winter sports season is off to a strong start, with over 100 students competing on a winter sports team. This year Oakcrest has five basketball teams—Varsity, JV, Middle School Green, Middle School White and Middle School Gold—as well as two swim teams—Varsity and Middle School.

In addition, 24 Upper School students will be taking Strength & Conditioning with Coach Jennifer Pruskowski.

The Varsity Basketball team is gearing up for its first scrimmage at home on Wednesday, November 20 against the Trinity Christian School Gryphons.  The team returns four starters in seniors Hannah Byrne and Catherine Spalding and sophomores Gabby Byrne and Elisabeth Dunch. Annie Smith, who is starting her fifth year as Head Coach, is most excited about playing more Virginia schools this season to earn a chance to qualify for the state tournament. “We have a good mix of returning and new players that add more dynamic to the team,” she says.

The Chargers have a heavy game schedule ahead, with three early season tournaments. The first tournament, Preseason Private School Basketball Tournament, will be hosted by Perry Hall Christian School in Maryland on November 23.  After Thanksgiving the team will participate in both the 25th Annual Saints Girls Invitational (December 3 & 4 at St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes) and the Potomac School Tip Off on December 6 & 7. Coach Smith describes her team as very athletic with a competitive spirit. She is excited to see where the season will take them.
