Xiaoyi Zuo (‘20)

Oakcrest’s International Program has a long tradition of welcoming students of all faiths and backgrounds. In 2017, the school greeted Xiaoyi Zuo (‘20) from Beijing, China, and she has been thriving here ever since.

While they were searching for a school in the United States, Xiaoyi and her mother were drawn to Oakcrest’s vibrant Catholic community and the fact that the school was all-girls.

Xiaoyi enjoys the many exciting opportunities that Oakcrest life opens up to her, through academics and extracurricular activities, that let her pursue her interests. One of the most memorable classes she’s taken so far has been AP Chemistry with Dr. Hussmann. Although Xiaoyi heard that the class was difficult and chemistry was not her strongest subject, she signed up anyway. The class gave her a whole new perspective.  “Dr. Hussmann is a wonderful teacher, who actually made me consider going further into chemistry in college,” she says.

Her interest in science extends outside the classroom as she participates in Oakcrest’s Science Olympiad and was part of the first all-girls team to compete at the Virginia State Science Olympiad this past spring.

At Oakcrest Xiaoyi also pursues fine arts.  She loves to sing and last year performed with Oakcrest’s concert chorus. She took AP Studio art last year and hopes to build up a portfolio in order to prepare her for an art-related major in college.

“My favorite thing about Oakcrest,” Xiaoyi says, “is the communication between the teachers and students. The teachers are as helpful as they can be to meet the requirements of the students, and give advice when a student has a problem.”
