Oakcrest to Welcome National Geographic Adventurer for Leadership Workshop

On November 21, Oakcrest will welcome author and 2012 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year Jennifer Pharr Davis to campus. Mrs. Pharr Davis will conduct leadership workshops tailored for each grade level, using stories from her experiences on the trail to talk to students about overcoming challenges through resiliency, adaptability, and teamwork.

In 2011, Mrs. Pharr Davis covered the 2,181-mile Appalachian Trail in forty-six days, eleven hours, and twenty minutes, maintaining a remarkable average of forty-seven miles per day. By doing this, she claimed the overall (male or female) fastest known time on the “A.T.” and became the first woman to set that mark.

Mrs. Pharr Davis has authored seven books, including her latest critically acclaimed work,
The Pursuit of Endurance: Harnessing the Record-Breaking Power of Strength and Resilience (Viking Press). She is a professional speaker and the founder and owner of Blue Ridge Hiking Company. She has served as a board member for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and ambassador for the American Hiking Society.

Leadership workshops at Oakcrest cover a wide range of personal development and leadership skills. The school invites outside speakers to lead practical discussions, often using case studies. The workshops help students understand specific aspects of leadership, character development, and virtue, fostering a moral awareness and a deepening self-knowledge. Past speakers have included author
Immaculée Ilibagiza and Julie Larkin, founder of the nonprofit Girl Talk.
