Oakcrest Seniors Named National Merit Scholarship Commended Students

Oakcrest Class of 2020 students Elizabeth Crishock, Angela Diaz-Bonilla, Madelyn Mislock, and Julia Fischer have been named National Merit Scholarship Commended Students.

They are among the 34,000 commended students nationwide who have been awarded this honor for showing exceptional academic promise. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.6 million entrants each year.

All four students are leaders in the Oakcrest community with wide-ranging academic and extracurricular interests. Both Elizabeth and Julia compete on Oakcrest’s Science Olympiad team and were part of the first ever all-girls team to go to the Virginia State Science Olympiad competition in the spring of 2019. Both have earned their Girl Scout Gold Award, and Julia serves as President of National Honor Society and Vice President of the Math and English Honor Societies. Angela is Oakcrest’s Executive Student Council Vice President, a Student Ambassador, and has performed in several Oakcrest theatre productions. Madelyn is an accomplished Latin scholar, having earned Magna Cum Laude in the National Latin Exam and a Bronze Medal on National Classical Etymology Exam. In addition, she plays on Oakcrest’s Varsity Soccer team and is a sprinter for the Track team.

“I am proud of our students,” says Head of School Dr. Mary T. Ortiz, “Because this honor reflects so well on their strong work ethic, good study habits and desire to use the gifts they have been given to serve others.”

With a rigorous liberal arts curriculum offering both depth and breadth in an array of subjects, including sixteen Advanced Placement courses, Oakcrest prepares its students for academic success after graduation. Learn more about our academic program here
