Students Complete Successful First Mission Trip

On Saturday, August 10, Oakcrest students arrived in Kingston, Jamaica, for the first mission trip in Oakcrest’s history.

Seventeen students, two alumnae, and four chaperones spent the week of August 10-16 serving at Mustard Seed Communities. Mustard Seed is a nonprofit organization dedicated to caring for the most vulnerable populations in society, particularly children and adults with a range of developmental and physical disabilities.

Mustard Seed runs homes for over four hundred residents in Jamaica. The Oakcrest team visited several of these houses during the week. Oakies stayed at Sophie’s Place, a home for children with disabilities in East Kingston. They spent time at Mary’s Child, a residence for teenage mothers and their babies; My Father’s House, the Mustard Seed headquarters, located in inner city Kingston; Jerusalem, a community housing a variety of residents, including children with disabilities, children with HIV, and adults with disabilities; and Jacob’s Ladder, a Mustard Seed community for adults with disabilities. At each place, the team spent time with the residents, helping feed them, playing and singing and praying with them, assisting at a Field Day for all the residents, and simply being present with them.

Students left Jamaica with a deep appreciation for the dignity of the residents and the many ways they’ve been blessed in their own lives.
