Rising Senior Takes First Place Out of 300 in Poetry Competition

Rising senior Megan Meehan won first place in the Tenth Annual Gabriela Mistral Youth Poetry Competition with her poem "Guardian Angel."

She also received an Honorable Mention for another work entitled "Silent Ones."

The Annual Gabriela Mistral Youth Poetry Competition honors the memory of Chilean poet and Nobel laureate Gabriela Mistral. Students in the D.C. metropolitan area ages 11 to 19 submit poems in English, Spanish, Portuguese, or any combination of these languages. "Guardian Angel" came in first out of over 300 entries, and Megan's outstanding work was recognized at an official awards ceremony at the Embassy of Chile on June 5.

Megan is the founder and president of Oakcrest's Poetry Club. She recently self-published a book of poems called Abditory. The collection is a reflection upon the despair and grief of losing a loved one and the hope that can be found afterwards through faith.

You can read Megan's winning poems here and find Abditory here.
