Chargers Take Second at VISAA Track & Field State Championships

Oakcrest’s Varsity Track & Field team crowned this season’s winning streak with a second-place overall finish at the VISAA Track & Field State Championships in Richmond on May 18.

This is a best performance for the school, and many individual athletes on the team broke school records and achieved top-three finishes.

The Chargers won first place in several events. Senior Lily James continued to sweep away competition in the 800m, once again sprinting to first place. Alex Murphy, Zoe Burke, Stephanie Murphy, and Lily James came together to win first in the 4x800m relay, and the 4x400m relay team (Alex Murphy, Hannah Lu, Zoe Burke, Lily James) also grabbed first place. Both relay teams set new school records.

Other highlights included third place wins in the 400m (Zoe Burke); 800m (Alex Murphy); Long Jump (Bridget Smith); and 4x100m relay (Julia Cipollone, Hannah Byrne, Adriana-Isabela Melendez-Munoz, Kateri Castillo).

This excellent finish follows a spring season full of victories on both the team and individual levels. Among many highlights, the Chargers just claimed the PVAC Track & Field Championship last week; Oakcrest’s 4x800m relay team took gold at the Draper Invitational Meet; and senior Lily James had an incredible season, achieving the fastest girls 800m time in the state of Virginia.

“Earning a second place finish is a true testament to the hard work these girls have put in all season,” says Head coach Jennifer Pruskowski. “Their talent, work ethic, and determination is what sets them apart from others and leads to their continual success.”
