57 Oakcrest Students Inducted into Honor Societies
Oakcrest inducted 57 students in grades 10-12 into five honor societies at an official ceremony on April 8.
Students received membership in the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Latin Honor Society, Math Honor Society (Mu Alpha Theta), and the Tolle Lege Chapter of the National English Honor Society.
The ceremony was conducted by Mary T. Ortiz, Head of School, and Elizabeth Black, Latin Master Teacher and Latin Honor Society Moderator. Oakcrest’s Chamber Ensemble provided accompaniment with a performance of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Aloborada.
“We are proud of these students' dedication to academic excellence shown through their hard work, curiosity and spirit of service, all values recognized by these five honor societies,” says Mary T. Ortiz. “We also naturally applaud our teachers whose love for learning inspires their students.”
Dr. Kat Hussmann, Oakcrest teacher and 2019 Virginia Science Olympiad Coach of the Year, delivered the keynote address. Dr. Hussmann graduated from the University of Illinois in 2007 with a BS in Biochemistry and BA in Spanish. Following graduation and before graduate school, she worked for a semester as a Chemistry lab manager at the University of Illinois. She continued her education at the University of Maryland, where she earned her Ph.D. in 2013 in biological sciences, focusing on virology and immunology.
After completing her education, she furthered her research experience as a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institutes of Health in the laboratory of Viral Diseases. She started to teach upper school science at Oakcrest in 2015, where she continues to share her true passion: to pursue scientific outreach and develop young scientists, preparing them for the complex problems and ethical decisions they will encounter as they move along in their education and career.
