Debate Team Kicks Off Tournament Season

On Saturday, December 5, Oakcrest student and Debate Team member Lucy Spence ('23) competed in the third annual Lincoln-Douglas Debate Tournament hosted by the Washington-Arlington Catholic Forensic League (WACFL).

One hundred participants from both public and private schools in the DC metropolitan area took part in the tournament. The topic was "Resolved: The United States ought to provide a federal jobs guarantee," and Lucy debated in the Junior Varsity division.

Lucy is an experienced member of the Debate Team; she placed third in the Novice division at the WACFL's 2019 February tournament. Oakcrest's Debate Team invites all Upper School students who love debate, logic, and proving their points. The team takes part in Lincoln-Douglas debates hosted by the WACFL throughout the year and in the past two years has had students who qualified for and competed in the WACFL debate Metro Finals. The team looks forward to competing in two more tournaments this school year in January and February of 2021.

"A Lincoln Douglas debate is a values-based debate, so it is always interesting to hear how the competitors argue their cases from common values like justice, morality, and human rights," says Debate Team moderator and Oakcrest history teacher Christine Nussio. "I am really looking forward to the January tournament when our new team members will be able to compete. Our team members always improve from tournament to tournament and I find it inspiring to see how hard the students work to prepare. They learn about new topics, gain confidence in their rhetoric and logic, and have a lot of fun."
