A Day in the Life - Sarah
6:45 am My day at Oakcrest starts with my carpool. Since I’m a senior this year, I’m excited that I’ll be driving to school with my sister, Alexandra (7th grade) and my friend Sally.

7:20 am I like getting to school early because it gives me a chance to go to my locker and get organized. As a senior, I’m excited to be one of the oldest students in the school, and getting to know everyone in the different grades.
7:50 am The first two class periods that I have are AP English and Modern Government and Law. English is my favorite class, because we always read aloud and then discuss what was read, tearing it apart to figure out what the author is saying in the plot, even if it’s obvious.
9:45 am Enrichment Period is when students have the choice of attending daily Mass or enrichment reading. This is a great part of the day because it’s late enough in the morning so that I am fully awake and paying attention to the Mass.
10:30 am After enrichment, the school has a break before third period. During break I usually do at least one of four things: hang out with my friends in the Senior Loft, eat the snack that I brought, visit other grades, or go to different meetings for the clubs that I participate in. I’m involved inthe Upper School Show, Math National Honor Society,Mathletes, Yearbook and I’m President of the Student Ambassador Club. As President of a Club, I meet with the Executive Officers before our club meetings to discuss the agenda, the upcoming Admission Coffees and luncheons for the new sixth grade. Most of our club meetings involve planning and organizing volunteers for the school’s Open House and parent coffees. At Oakcrest, students give tours of the campus to prospective families, so student sign-ups for these events are always needed.
10:45 am My third period class is AP Calculus. The class is challenging and I’m a little nervous about taking it, but I’m good at math and I have a great teacher, she’s one of my favorites.
11:50 am Right before lunch I have my fourth period Philosophy class. In addition to the regular classes, once a week we have an extra meeting called Philosophy Flicks. While watching a movie we discuss with our teacher the relevance of the movie to the study of philosophy. We also do research on the characters and plot. It is fun, I like the way we bring philosophy into everyday life.
12:40 pm I brought my own lunch today, pasta is my favorite dish to bring. On Wednesdays I can purchase Pizza for a $1.50 a slice provided by the Parent Association, Thursdays I have the option of pre-ordering Chick-Fil-A, and on Fridays I have the option of ordering Healthy Lunch. As a senior I have the option of eating in the senior lunch room in Walsh Hall or the main lunch area. Occasionally, I go off-campus for lunch with my classmates; I just sign out at the Front Office and have lunch in McLean, before returning for my afternoon classes.
1:15 pm My 5th period Study hall is a chance for me to get started on my homework. I usually have around two hours of homework a night, which I always manage to finish thanks to my study hall during the day and being able to ask my teachers questions.
2:10 pm Physics class with “Dr. J” is in the science lab and is always interesting. Last year, she led a group of sophomores who were Regional Winners in a National Science Competition.
3:00 pm School is over but the fun has just begun. As a participant in the Upper School Show I usually have practice for either or both activities after school. Last year I was the student assistant to the Musical Director for the Show, which I really enjoyed because I got to hang out with my friends. Participating in these events also gives me an opportunity to see the cast and crew evolve from a rough to a polished performance opening night, which is really fun.
5:00 pm It is time to head home to finish my homework and work on my college applications. I’m a little nervous about college next year, but I’m also really excited. I’ve already been talking to the College Counselor about it and asking my teachers for letters of recommendation, and I’m ready for my college essays because in my junior year one of our assignments in English class was to write a personal statement. Tomorrow is another big day at Oakcrest and I can’t wait to be there.
