Mount Vernon & University of Maryland Team Up to Offer Preservation Field School May 28-July 3Mount Vernon's archaeology team is offering a hands-on experience this summer through a new class offered in partnership with the University of Maryland. Students will work with expert faculty and staff to investigate the archaeological, architectural, and interpretive histories of the Washington family’s kitchen while learning historic preservation method and theory. In addition to gaining first-hand experience and participating in readings, discussions, and field trips, students will also interpret the work to Mount Vernon’s visitors. The six-credit course is open to full-time undergraduate and graduate students in good standing. For more information, email ebreen@mountvernon.org. |

Summer Programs
Summer Philosophy Program at Princeton University - June 23 - 29, 2013
Witherspoon Institute is again offering a unique experience for rising 11th and 12th grade students - Moral Life and the Classical Tradition. The girls read original texts by Plato and Aristotle and attend classes given by Philosophy professors.
In addition, our Philosophy teacher, Ms. Holly Salls, has been invited to form part of the staff and will lead the discussion sessions that prepare the students for the lectures. All students who will be juniors or seniors in the Fall of 2013 are invited to apply. To facilitate conversation and friendship the program is kept very small. If your daughter is interested, please go to the website. We have included the information from the website below. The application itself can be found on the website. Deadline for application is April 1, 2013.
Both courses are structured by rigorous discussion and student-teacher interaction; students therefore are expected to prepare well by reading and understanding the assigned material before class. Classes will be supplemented with quiet time for study and extracurricular activities, including sports, cultural outings, and opportunities for spiritual reflection.
Students live for the week in the dormitories of Princeton University under the supervision of Residential Advisors, who organize evening recreational activities.
The Moral Life and the Classical Tradition Seminar is a challenging intellectual experience that introduces high school students to serious scholars of the humanities.
